April 6, 2001, Newsletter Issue #18: Congestion in the Breastfed Baby

Tip of the Week

If your nursling catches a cold, she might find it difficult to nurse because she cannot breathe feely through her nose. To help her to feel more comfortable try using a saline nasal spray and a pediatric decongestant. You could also try turning on the hot water and sitting in the bathroom with the door closed together. The steam will help to clear her nose.

It is common for babies to start biting at a time like this. Try to be patient. It is just a sign of frustration that they cannot breathe. Gently remove your nursling from the breast, and help her to latch on correctly again.
If your little one is still finding it too difficult to nurse, try expressing and offering the milk from a sippy cup until things improve.
