March 16, 2001, Newsletter Issue #15: To Wean or Not to Wean...

Tip of the Week

If somebody confronts you with "I think it`s time you weaned that child." here are some ways of dealing with their criticism:

"What for?"
"Really?"
"Now is when it`s really getting fun."
"What could we possibly gain from that?"
"I don`t. Neither does he."
"The AAP recommends breastfeeding for at least one year and the WHO and UNICEF recommend breastfeeding for at least two years. Where are you getting your information from?"

If both you and your child are enjoying nursing then there is absolutely no reason why you should feel compelled to end that relationship.

Remember- if you are experiencing problems then a IBCLC or LLL (NMAA in Australia) will be more than willing to help you.
