December 11, 2009, Newsletter Issue #143: Dealing with Dirty Looks

Tip of the Week

Although our intention when nursing is to provide natural nutrition to our infants, other people can take our public nursing to mean a lack of discretion. Explaining to those who might shoot you a strange look won't do much good. They have their notions. What you can do is try to understand that while we know the benefits of nursing, others do not. It is hard to tell whether a man who glances at you while nursing is admiring the wonderful sight of a woman interacting with her child, or if he is turning something beautiful into something he shouldn't. Women passers-by may wonder what their husbands and boyfriends are thinking and if they noticed you nursing your child in public. However, do not be ashamed of what you are doing. The insecurities of others are not your worry. Simply give a natural and friendly smile. After all, if the rest of us are allowed to eat in public, shouldn't babies be allowed to as well?
